ThredUp, a leading online fashion resale platform, has launched a suite of artificial intelligence-driven shopping tools aimed at enhancing the customer experience.

The newly introduced tools include an improved search function, an advanced image search, and an AI-powered chatbot, according to a press release issued on Monday, August 5.

“AI represents a significant advancement for secondhand shopping, infusing emotion and storytelling into the numerous unique shopping journeys that occur on ThredUp,” said ThredUp CEO James Reinhart in the release. “With millions of unique items available in our marketplace at any time, generative AI technology is revolutionizing how consumers shop, making it easier and more enjoyable to shop sustainably.”

The enhanced search function enables customers to find outfits using specific, natural language queries such as “swimsuit for a triathlon” or “tank tops for the 4th of July.” The upgraded image search feature allows users to take or upload photos or share Instagram posts to find matching or similar items within ThredUp’s extensive inventory.

Additionally, the new AI-powered chatbot allows customers to input prompts like “outfit for a fall wedding” and receive recommendations for a complete look. Users can further refine their results by adjusting parameters such as color, style, and coverage to create a personalized ensemble.

This innovation comes as the resale industry faces challenges in maintaining profitability. ThredUp’s data indicates that the U.S. secondhand apparel market was valued at approximately $43 billion in 2023.
