ACT Government Support Helps Entrepreneur Realize Fashion Dream

Kai McKenzie, a budding entrepreneur, has successfully turned his passion for fashion into a thriving business, thanks to guidance from the Canberra Business Advice and Support Service (CBASS). Despite an early triumph with his fashion label, McKenzie is now focused on taking his venture to the next level with strategic planning advice from CBASS.

McKenzie’s journey into the fashion world began after an unexpected career shift. Following four years as an apprentice, he had just completed his final exam to become a qualified electrician. However, when he was laid off from his full-time electrician role due to company downsizing late last year, McKenzie decided to pursue his true passion—fashion.

Drawing inspiration from his cultural background, McKenzie launched Minami Studios, a Japanese-inspired fashion label that honors his heritage. Born to a Japanese mother and an Australian father, McKenzie described his brand as a tribute to his mother’s heritage and her maiden name.
