Guizhou, China — In the heart of Basha Village, located in Congjiang County of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China’s Guizhou Province, traditional ethnic embroidery is finding new relevance in the fashion world.

Jiao, a local artisan known for her skillful embroidery, has expressed her pride in merging traditional craftsmanship with modern fashion. “Creating pieces rooted in our ethnic culture that can also ‘dialogue’ with the world gives me greater confidence in preserving and developing intangible cultural heritage,” Jiao said.

At the recent FA International Frontier Innovative Art and Design Competition (China division), Jiao’s work gained significant recognition. Among over 13,000 submissions, her fashion illustrations inspired by Miao embroidery were awarded gold and bronze in the professional category.

The gold-winning piece, titled “Journey of Splendor,” showcases a creative reinterpretation of traditional Miao embroidery motifs, such as people, flowers, and birds, through geometric forms. This innovative approach integrates contemporary design aesthetics with Miao embroidery culture, offering a vibrant portrayal of the Miao people’s current dynamic life.
