MILAN (AP) — Milan Fashion Week came to a close after six days of womenswear previews, culminating in a gala award ceremony at the renowned Teatro alla Scala, which focused on sustainability innovations within the fashion industry.
Initiated in 2017, these awards aim to highlight green innovations in an industry often criticized for its excesses and to enhance brand communication regarding efforts to reduce their carbon footprints.
Additionally, the week marked the second edition of the Black Carpet Awards, which celebrate excellence among people of color living and working in Italy, promoting equity within the industry.
British fashion designer Ib Kamara and Angolan supermodel Maria Borges presented the awards, recognizing individuals from various sectors. Honorees included shot-putter Danielle Madam, actor Alberto Malachino, Cinzia Adanna Ebonine—an educator who founded a platform for inclusive education—Justin Randolph Thompson, founder of Black History Month Florence, and Alice Edun, who launched Italy’s first haircare brand dedicated to curly hair.
In a show of cultural pride, many award winners chose to deliver their acceptance speeches in Italian, highlighting their integration and identity as Italians.
