Vogue’s recent announcement regarding the 2025 Met Gala has raised alarms among fashion enthusiasts, with many expressing fears of a potential “appropriation disaster.” The publication revealed that the co-chairs for the gala will include notable figures such as Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, Anna Wintour, and honorary chair LeBron James.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City also unveiled the Costume Institute’s upcoming spring exhibition, titled “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This exhibition draws inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.” According to Vogue, the exhibit will showcase a variety of garments, paintings, and photographs that delve into the enduring style of Black men through the lens of dandyism, spanning from the 18th century to the present.
While some fans celebrated the announcement as a long-awaited recognition, others voiced concerns on social media, suggesting it could lead to cultural appropriation issues.
