Spanish actress Penélope Cruz, a longtime collaborator of director Pedro Almodóvar and a brand ambassador for Chanel, recently visited Hong Kong for the restaging of the Chanel Cruise 2024-25 show. Cruz, who is married to actor Javier Bardem and a mother of two, has become a global icon, known for her remarkable performances in multiple languages and her versatility in both European cinema and Hollywood blockbusters.
In an exclusive interview following the Chanel event, Cruz shared insights into her relationship with the fashion house, her career, and her admiration for Almodóvar.
First Impressions of Hong Kong
Cruz was in Hong Kong for just 48 hours, but her brief visit left a lasting impression. “It’s my first trip here, and it’s really beautiful,” she said. “I loved the light when I arrived. The people are incredibly kind, and the food is amazing. It’s a short trip, but I hope to return one day with my family.”
Her Longstanding Relationship with Chanel
Growing up, Cruz admired Chanel, but never imagined she would one day wear its designs or become an ambassador. “It’s been many years together now, and I love working with them,” she said. “What Chanel represents, its values, and the respect they show to everyone in the company – it’s all very special. I know people who have worked at Chanel for over 30 years, and that says a lot.”
Chanel’s dedication to cinema also resonates with Cruz, who values the brand’s ongoing support of the film industry. “Chanel understands the deep connection between fashion and cinema,” she explained. “They’re not just at film festivals for the red carpet. They truly love cinema, and that makes a difference.”
Memorable Campaign with Brad Pitt
One of the highlights of Cruz’s collaboration with Chanel was the iconic handbag campaign with Brad Pitt. The shoot, which took place on the beach in Deauville, was done in secrecy, with no paparazzi or fans in sight. “It was amazing,” she said. “We shot in the winter, and nobody knew. It was a big surprise when the campaign came out, and the reaction has been incredible. The bag is such an iconic piece, with so much history. It’s one of the most special moments I’ve had with Chanel.”
Working with Karl Lagerfeld
Cruz also recalled her first campaign with Chanel, which was shot by the legendary Karl Lagerfeld. “I was really nervous, but Karl had a rock ‘n’ roll style,” she said. “We started shooting late at night, and the entire campaign was done in just two hours. He was so fast – even choosing the pictures right then and there. It was a unique experience.”
Mastering Multiple Languages
Cruz’s ability to act in four languages – Spanish, English, Italian, and French – has set her apart in the film industry. “It’s hard work, but I love languages,” she said. “When I filmed Don’t Move in Italian, I had to learn the language and lose my accent. It took months of practice, but I’ve always wanted to work in different languages and cultures.”
A Special Bond with Pedro Almodóvar
Cruz’s professional relationship with Almodóvar has been one of the most important of her career. “He’s my number one, and I consider him family,” she said. “I’ve made seven films with him, and I hope to make many more. The more I know him, the more I admire and respect him. It’s endless.”
Cruz’s visit to Hong Kong and her reflections on her career and collaborations highlight her passion for both film and fashion, as well as her enduring relationships with the people who have shaped her journey.
