Demna’s Latest Balenciaga Collection: A Bold Fusion of Merch and Metatarsals

Balenciaga’s creative director, Demna, unveiled his Fall 2025 collection on December 2, coinciding with Cyber Monday, a day long associated with online shopping. Instead of a traditional runway show, Demna opted for a minimalist approach, shooting a lookbook on his iPhone in an unadorned dressing room, using models without makeup or styling. The collection, titled “Collection Materials,” showcased Demna’s signature designs, including men’s underwear repurposed as mini skirts and T-shirts transformed into gowns. Notable were oversized Hefty-bag-style silhouettes, including wool overcoats inspired by Cristóbal Balenciaga’s 1951 Semi-Fitted design.

Football jerseys and tracksuits were reimagined into avant-garde pieces, such as track pants turned into halter dresses and hoodie-leather hybrids with fringe details. Several T-shirts featured the faces of brand ambassadors like Nicole Kidman and Michelle Yeoh, reimagined as pop stars on concert merchandise.

Known for blurring the lines between high fashion and mass-market appeal, Demna’s latest work continues this theme. His collaboration with Dr. Scholl’s resulted in a line of comfy, logo-laden sweatsuits paired with memory foam pillows and Scholl clog heels. Perhaps the most daring item was a pair of “Zero” shoes, which are essentially molded foot inserts that cover only the heel and big toe, leaving the rest exposed.

Demna’s collection also included a traditional collaboration with Automobili Lamborghini, featuring leather racing jackets and key fob accessories, tapping into the growing influence of Formula One fandom on fashion. His designs offer a mix of irony, self-expression, and consumer critique, challenging the overconsumption culture of the fashion industry. Ultimately, Demna’s collection asks consumers to reflect on their desire for excess while questioning the nature of fashion and style itself.
