Milan, Italy (AP) — British designer John Galliano is stepping down from his role as artistic director of Maison Margiela, after a decade at the helm, the Paris-based brand’s parent company announced on Wednesday. No successor has been named.
Renzo Rosso, chairman of OTB Group, the Italian company that owns Maison Margiela, praised Galliano for his transformative influence on the fashion house. “John made it the most cutting-edge couture house in the world,” Rosso said, reflecting on Galliano’s impact. “The last decade has been filled with incredible work, spectacular shows, and beautiful designs that have set the stage for the future.”
Galliano, who was controversially dismissed from Christian Dior in 2011 following antisemitic remarks, thanked Rosso for the opportunity to return to fashion. “I continue to atone, and I will never stop dreaming,” Galliano stated. “My wings mended, 10 years later, I am forever grateful for this safe space to create, and his undying support.”
The designer’s comeback began in January 2015, when he presented a small couture collection for Maison Margiela in London. The show, attended by a select audience of about 100, marked his return to the spotlight after his fall from grace.
Galliano’s career began in 1995 when Givenchy appointed him as head designer, followed by his rise at Christian Dior in 1996, where he would remain for 15 years. Known for his theatrical runway shows, Galliano became one of the most influential designers of his generation.
