The Eretz Israel Museum (MUZA) in Tel Aviv has unveiled a new exhibition dedicated to the renowned Israeli fashion house Maskit. The exhibit, titled Maskit 10/30/70, opened on July 29 and will be on display until mid-December. This showcase highlights the evolution and impact of Maskit, a brand celebrated for its innovative interpretations of Middle Eastern traditional dress.
Founded in 1954 by Ruth Dayan, the wife of former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, Maskit initially emerged as a government-supported initiative aimed at integrating new immigrants from the Middle East and North Africa into the fabric of Israeli society. Dayan, who passed away at the age of 103 on February 5, 2021, was inspired by the craftsmanship of women in immigrant camps and sought to harness their skills to create a distinctive fashion brand.
The Maskit 10/30/70 exhibition spans three significant phases in the brand’s history: its founding, closure, and revival. The title reflects these milestones, with “10” representing the year of Maskit’s inception, “30” marking the closure of its boutiques three decades later, and “70” indicating the brand’s resurgence as a haute couture label in 2014.
The display includes a range of Maskit creations, from iconic pieces like the “Desert Coat,” “Ein Gedi Dress,” and “Kinneret Shirt” to contemporary interpretations of Maskit’s signature style. The exhibition also features an array of textiles, handicrafts, carpets, jewelry, documents, photographs, and rare archival footage.
Curated by Shachar Atwan and assisted by associate curator Yelena Elgart-Sharon, the exhibition explores Maskit’s evolution in response to global fashion trends and geopolitical changes, as well as its ongoing influence and prestige within the fashion industry.
