Fashion for Good has unveiled a new initiative designed to “accelerate and validate” innovative footwear solutions. The project, which features partnerships with major industry players such as Adidas, On Running, PVH Corp, Reformation, Target, Zalando, and ZARA owner Inditex, aims to enhance footwear circularity through a comprehensive approach across four key workstreams.

The initiative focuses on the following workstreams:

Materials: Identifying and validating sustainable alternatives for key footwear materials, including TPU, PU, EVA, leather, and rubber.

Design: Establishing circular design principles and driving collective guidelines to create a circular infrastructure within the footwear industry.

End of Use: Sorting, Disassembly, & Recycling: Building a detailed dataset on post-consumer footwear waste, including its volume, construction, and composition. This workstream also aims to identify and validate solutions for repair, disassembly, and recycling.

Traceability: Developing a comprehensive footwear traceability protocol to substantiate sustainability claims and support evidence-based practices.

Katrin Ley, Managing Director of Fashion for Good, emphasized the initiative’s importance, stating, “Fashion for Good and our corporate partners, including Adidas, recognize the urgent need to accelerate innovation in footwear sustainability. Over the past seven years, we have consistently challenged industry norms. By intensifying our efforts, we aim to drive circularity and validate sustainable solutions in a sector that is primed for transformation.”
