In the world of fashion, where eccentric accessories often take the spotlight, this summer’s trend is refreshingly practical. Enter the phone strap—a practical and budget-friendly accessory that’s quickly becoming a staple for everyone from busy commuters to Hollywood celebrities.

Fashion has previously seen its fair share of extravagant items, such as Fendi’s £440 lollipop holder designed specifically for a Chupa Chups or Gucci’s £2,290 canvas pet carrier. However, this season’s must-have is surprisingly sensible. The phone strap, once considered a utilitarian item, is now making waves for its functionality and versatility.

During peak hours, it’s common to see both commuters and tourists with their phones attached to corded straps, comfortably hanging across their shoulders. Meanwhile, Gen Z users on TikTok are adding a stylish twist to their outfits by attaching their phones to beaded straps, which they elegantly drape over their wrists or shoulders.

This trend is driven by practicality. In the UK, people check their phones every 12 minutes, making the smartphone an almost permanent extension of the hand. With the increasing size of devices—some as large as a small paperback—carrying them in a bag or pocket can be cumbersome. A strap offers a practical solution, making it easier to carry even the largest phones.

Rachel Steed-Middleton, founder of London-based brand String Ting, highlights the necessity of phone straps in today’s world. “Our phones have become an extension of our central nervous system, integral to how we navigate daily life,” she explains. Her brand offers colorful beaded straps, which have garnered fans like Kendall Jenner, Dua Lipa, and Gigi Hadid, who favors a blue strap adorned with puffy cloud charms.

The trend extends beyond String Ting. Dutch brand Ateljé’s recycled pearl chain sold out after being featured in the trailer for the fourth season of Emily in Paris. Hong Kong-based Topologie, known for its rock climbing-inspired gear, offers colorful rope straps with quick-release carabiners and bungee clasps. Additionally, Etsy showcases a variety of handmade phone straps, from oversized resin chains to cozy woolen crochet designs.
