Meanwhile, Gen Z users on TikTok are adding a stylish twist to their outfits by attaching their phones to beaded straps, which they elegantly drape over their wrists or shoulders.
This trend is driven by practicality. In the UK, people check their phones every 12 minutes, making the smartphone an almost permanent extension of the hand. With the increasing size of devices—some as large as a small paperback—carrying them in a bag or pocket can be cumbersome. Rachel Steed-Middleton, founder of London-based brand String Ting, highlights the necessity of phone straps in today’s world. “Our phones have become an extension of our central nervous system, integral to how we navigate daily life,” she explains. Her brand offers colorful beaded straps, which have garnered fans like Kendall Jenner, Dua Lipa, and Gigi Hadid, who favors a blue strap adorned with puffy cloud charms.
The trend extends beyond String Ting. Dutch brand Ateljé’s recycled pearl chain sold out after being featured in the trailer for the fourth season of Emily in Paris. Hong Kong-based Topologie, known for its rock climbing-inspired gear, offers colorful rope straps with quick-release carabiners and bungee clasps. Additionally, Etsy showcases a variety of handmade phone straps, from oversized resin chains to cozy woolen crochet designs.
