Aurora James, founder of the luxury footwear brand Brother Vellies and the non-profit Fifteen Percent Pledge, recently appeared on the Glossy Fashion Podcast. James, a prominent figure in the fashion industry, has also been serving as the vice chair of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) since January 2023. In addition, she published her memoir, Wildflower, which was released in paperback last month, and co-manages the Parity Collective, a private equity fund aimed at investing in founders of color.

James addressed the complexities of balancing her numerous roles, emphasizing the challenges of managing multiple ventures. “I want to manage expectations for people about what life is supposed to be like when you take on that much work or even what it means to be an entrepreneur,” James said in the latest episode of the Glossy Podcast. “It’s a lot, and burning out in that situation is normal, and failing sometimes is normal, too.”

In her conversation, James also highlighted her commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) within the fashion industry. She discussed her ongoing efforts to expand DE&I initiatives and explored the often overlooked aspects of entrepreneurship. The podcast features excerpts from her discussion, which have been lightly edited for clarity.
