South Korea has announced a comprehensive new strategy aimed at revitalizing its textile and fashion industry, with a focus on advanced technologies, eco-friendly practices, and digital transformation. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, is designed to significantly enhance the country’s position in the global market for industrial and sustainable textiles by 2030.

Trade, Industry, and Energy Minister Dukgeun Ahn detailed the Textile and Fashion Industry Competitiveness Strategy, which seeks to expand South Korea’s global market share in industrial and eco-friendly textiles from the current 2-3% to 10% over the next decade. The strategy also aims to accelerate digital transformation within the industry, increasing adoption from 35% to 60%.

A key component of the plan is the development of world-class technologies in high-performance aramids, carbon fibers, and electronic textiles. To support these advancements, the government has established a ₩2.9 trillion (KRW) fund to assist companies in integrating industrial textiles into their products. Additionally, the strategy includes the creation of an Industrial Textile Alliance and a Tech Textile Product Certification Evaluation Support Center to bolster innovation and quality assurance in the sector.

Beyond technological innovation, the strategy places a strong emphasis on sustainability. The government plans to invest ₩31 billion in initiatives such as fiber-to-fiber recycling, the development of plant-based vegan leather, and biodegradable fibers. To further promote eco-friendly practices, over 200 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will receive waste heat recovery facilities, and new carbon emissions standards and eco-design guidelines will be introduced.

This ambitious strategy reflects South Korea’s commitment to leading the global textile and fashion industry into a more sustainable, technologically advanced future.
