As London Fashion Week approaches, Oxfam supporters are challenging the notion that second-hand clothing is inferior, emphasizing that “second-hand isn’t second best.” The charity is set to open the prestigious event with a runway show that highlights sustainable fashion choices, marking the launch of its sixth annual Second Hand September campaign.
This year, Oxfam is focusing on the environmental impact of the fashion industry, particularly its strain on the planet’s water resources. By raising awareness of how shopping decisions can significantly reduce environmental damage, the charity hopes to inspire more people to choose pre-loved clothing.
In a noteworthy collaboration, Oxfam has partnered with the online marketplace Vinted for the “Style for Change” runway show, scheduled for September 12. The event will feature outfits curated by second-hand fashion pioneer Bay Garnett, who is renowned for styling celebrities like Kate Moss in thrifted and vintage clothing. Garnett expressed her frustration with the stigma surrounding second-hand fashion, calling it “insanity” that society views celebrities wearing vintage or repeated outfits on the red carpet as unconventional.
Through this campaign and runway show, Oxfam aims to shift perceptions about second-hand fashion, highlighting its value and potential to contribute to a more sustainable future.
