In a glittering ceremony at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on September 6, local designer Tiger Chung was announced as the winner of the 2024 Redress Design Award. This marks the first time a Hongkonger has secured the top prize in the competition, which challenges designers to integrate sustainable practices into their fashion designs.
The Redress Design Award, an initiative of the Hong Kong-based environmental NGO Redress, is in its 14th year. It aims to foster eco-conscious fashion by encouraging emerging designers to explore and implement environmentally friendly techniques in their work. The competition, which receives entries from around the globe, seeks to address the pressing issue of climate change, particularly its impact on Asia.
Tiger Chung, whose journey in fashion began with DIY crafts in childhood, impressed the judges with innovative creations made from repurposed materials such as old towels, curtains, socks, and even a sofa. Chung’s dedication to sustainable fashion and creative reuse earned them the top honor in this year’s competition.
Among the ten finalists chosen from a pool of hundreds of global applicants, Chung and their peers participated in a series of challenges. The finalists first competed in Vietnam, where Chung’s team emerged victorious in a group task, before heading to Hong Kong for the final stages of the competition.
The grand final fashion show, held on September 6, featured four outfits from each finalist. The event attracted a large audience of fashion enthusiasts and industry professionals, who gathered to witness the impressive designs showcased on the runway.
