A unique initiative in Germany is making headlines as Rainbow Wool unveils its campaign promoting acceptance and equality for the LGBTQIA+ community through fashion made from the wool of gay rams. The campaign, developed by Serviceplan, features Tokio Hotel singer Bill Kaulitz as its ambassador, collaborating with German designers Danny Reinke and Kilian Kerner to create the inaugural haute couture collection.
Despite progress in many areas, homosexuality remains criminalized in 62 countries. In response, Rainbow Wool actively funds initiatives that raise awareness for the queer community and supports efforts for legal and social equality.
The wool used by Rainbow Wool is sourced from the farm of shepherd Michael Stücke in Löhne, North Rhine-Westphalia. A member of the Gayfarmer Association, Stücke produces yarn for various creative applications from over 20 gay sheep. The campaign emphasizes that while gay rams are often deemed “unvaluable” in industrial farming and face slaughter, they lead fulfilling lives at Rainbow Wool Farm, yielding high-quality wool for distinctive fashion pieces.
