Melbourne Fashion Week (M/FW) is set to celebrate its 30th year this October, with the announcement that internationally acclaimed musician G Flip will serve as the event’s ambassador. The Melbourne-born artist will perform during the Closing Showcase at Melbourne Town Hall.
Scheduled from October 21 to 27, M/FW will feature an impressive lineup of 300 designers and retailers, offering over 100 events and sessions. The event will include seven premium runways in iconic city locations like Queen Victoria Market and Little Bourke Street. Notable designers participating include Aje, Alpha60, Bec + Bridge, and Grace Lillian Lee, among others.
This year’s program will also highlight three pop-up runways and five Fashion Capsule exhibits showcasing the work of more than 70 local designers, creatives, artisans, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. Marking its 10th anniversary, the Fashion Capsules program has reached over 10 million viewers.
The M/FW Conversations program has been revised and will take place at Queen & Collins. Additionally, a new ‘RE
’ hub, presented by Spring Place and supported by Collarts, will host talks, workshops, and a pre-loved clothing swap and market from October 23 to 26.
Among the more than 100 events, attendees can look forward to independent activations, including a showcase by international fashion illustrator Megan Hess and a Melbourne Conversations event centered on ‘dopamine dressers.’
M/FW will also feature a Student Collections Runway and Awards to spotlight emerging local fashion designers.
Lord Mayor Nick Reece emphasized Melbourne’s commitment to supporting local talent, stating, “For three decades, Melbourne has championed its brilliant local designers and creatives who have helped cement our city as Australia’s fashion capital.” He anticipates over 100,000 attendees will contribute to the local economy through the event’s runway-to-retail focus.
Since 2021, M/FW has generated more than $84 million in economic benefits, supporting numerous jobs. Roshena Campbell, City Activation portfolio lead councillor, noted last year’s event contributed $23 million to Melbourne’s economy and supported over 1,000 jobs.
G Flip expressed pride in being chosen as the face of this year’s event, stating, “Fashion has played a huge role in my life, especially when it came to exploring and finding my sexuality and gender identity. I am thrilled to spotlight the talented designers from my hometown as part of Melbourne Fashion Week.”
