Young Americans are increasingly at the forefront of the sustainable fashion movement, driven by growing environmental concerns and a desire for conscientious consumerism. Experts note that teenagers today are asking vital questions about sustainability in an industry often criticized for its environmental impact.
“Teenagers are leading the sustainable fashion charge. They are heavily influenced by social media and possess a greater awareness of environmental issues compared to older generations,” stated Amrut Sadachar, associate professor of apparel merchandising at Auburn University. “This awareness is reflected in their fashion choices, with many opting for sustainable brands, thrifting, renting, reselling, upcycling, and engaging in DIY projects.”
While the sustainable fashion movement began in the 1970s, today’s youth are revitalizing it with demands for transparency, a rise in thrifting, and innovation in sustainable materials. Juan Hinestroza, professor of fiber science and apparel design at Cornell University, expressed admiration for today’s teenagers: “I’m very impressed with the new generation that is inquiring about how products are made. This is a crucial first step in understanding the issues we face.”
