My interest in fashion has evolved over the years, particularly intensifying around eighth grade when I began to see the trends of my childhood—like high-waisted skinny jeans—as somewhat absurd. I once believed the 2000s would be relegated to the annals of fashion history, akin to the 1950s and 60s, with styles like poodle skirts reserved for costume parties.
Yet, I find myself pleasantly surprised to be mistaken. While I may not have fully appreciated the Y2K styles when they first emerged, or when they were later dismissed as “ugly” in the 2010s, those very pieces are now making a comeback in my wardrobe—perhaps because I long for that era in my life.
Why do I find myself shouting along to “Dynamite” at Goodfellows? Why am I reaching for low-rise jeans? Why do I feel an urge to reconnect with my parents more frequently? I could attribute these feelings to typical senior-year nostalgia, but there’s an undeniable stylishness in these choices. Is there truly such a thing as being “2000 and late”?
