As the debate over generational fashion trends continues, many are growing weary of the narrative that pits Millennials against Gen-Z. With preferences for Instagram versus TikTok, WhatsApp over Snapchat, and matcha versus iced lattes, the year of birth seems less significant when it comes to personal style. However, as a Millennial fashion editor, I’ve observed that my Gen-Z colleagues often anticipate trends before they reach the mainstream. Items like bandanas and the latest Aries collaborations have already found their way into their shopping carts while many of us are still catching up.
Gen-Z is undeniably shaping the trend cycle, bringing back styles like jorts, football jerseys, low-slung jeans, bandeau tops, and Uggs—nostalgic pieces that Millennials wore previously and didn’t expect to see return so soon. With the under-27 demographic gaining substantial purchasing power, brands are increasingly attentive to their preferences. To explore these differences further, we’ve compiled a list of eight autumn trends that both Millennials and Gen-Z editors are currently excited about. Dive in to discover which styles resonate with each group.
