Rejina Pyo, renowned fashion designer, is set to unveil her first curated art exhibition, “As She Is,” at the Soho Revue gallery in London on October 23. This marks Pyo as the latest designer to embrace art as an alternative medium for expression.
In the days leading up to the exhibition’s opening, Pyo expressed her frustration with the traditional fashion industry, particularly the male perspective that often dominates it. She has recently moved away from conventional fashion shows, stating, “I was tired of the very exclusive concept of people fighting for the front row and it was all about ‘who am I sitting with?'” Instead, Pyo aims to use art to foster direct communication and connection with a broader audience. “I like the idea that this exhibition is open to everyone, from seven to 70 years old,” she remarked.
The exhibition focuses on celebrating femininity, drawing inspiration from Christina Rossetti’s poem “In the Artist’s Studio,” which critiques the objectification of women in Pre-Raphaelite art. “As She Is” features a diverse array of works from both established and emerging artists, including Ángela de la Cruz, Chantal Joffe, Cassi Namoda, Jane Yang-D’Haene, Joline Kwakkenbos, and writer Rachel Cusk. Additionally, it showcases art collected by Pyo’s mother, Bo-sung Kang, in Korea, further enriching the exhibition’s narrative.
