As the fall semester progresses, the seasons continue to shift. We’re deep into autumn, and winter is approaching fast. Last week’s warm spell may have tricked Rider students into thinking summer was back, but it’s time to prepare for colder days ahead. Here are some predictions and recommendations for winter trends.
A reliable coat is essential for surviving New Jersey’s cold. While puffer jackets have been popular recently, there are several alternatives to consider. Parkas, for example, are a classic choice that provides more warmth than standard puffers. No one enjoys shivering on the walk between classes, especially when it gets dark early. Another cozy option is an insulated down jacket, which shares the puffer’s style but retains body heat better.
While black coats are timeless, why not switch it up with colors? A coat in your favorite color or even in a neutral shade can bring refreshing variety to winter wear.
The bow trend has captivated the fashion world over the past few years. Previously, bows were mostly pastel and delicate. While that look has faded, we may see a resurgence with a twist. Chunky ribbons, in seasonal colors like red, black, and gold, could make stylish additions as the holiday season nears.
Beanies, wildly popular a few years ago, seem to have faded on campus. Yet they’re practical for winter and add a nice touch to simple outfits. Lined beanies are also available for those with locs, braids, and twists, enhancing comfort and style. Given how trends recycle, the classic beanie may be on the rise again soon.
Corduroy pants are poised to become a seasonal favorite. The fabric is both comfortable and thick enough to stay warm while looking stylish. Corduroys come in autumnal shades like black, dark purple, and wine red, adding interesting texture and statement value to outfits. They bring a unique touch that elevates a look more than standard jeans.
In footwear, Ugg slippers and boots are enduringly popular. However, their soft material won’t hold up in rain and snow. For durable, stylish protection, students should consider Dr. Martens. These boots aren’t just a trend; they’re a lasting style choice that’s both functional and fashionable, with lined versions available for added warmth.
I spoke with a few students on campus to get their take on colors and outfit preferences for the coming seasons, as well as which trends they’d like to see gain popularity.
Cassie Rudolph, a junior majoring in game and interactive media design, shared that she loves autumn tones like cranberry, auburn, and olive. She noted that denim is her fall staple; a good pair of jeans, she said, works well for both fall and winter and complements nearly any outfit.
Denise King, a senior in contemporary theater practice and film and television, enjoys wearing yellow, orange, flannels, and layers with white or black turtlenecks. Asked about trends, Denise shared that they prefer wearing pieces that “spark joy,” and believe everyone should feel free to wear what they love.
Junior communication studies major Kyleigh Carpentieri favors the classic combination of a sweater, skirt, tights, and boots in the fall. She says this outfit is both cute and universally wearable. She also noted that animal print could return to style, which suits the winter season. I agree—animal print can be striking when styled well.
I’m excited to see how students will be dressing in the months ahead, and I hope everyone finds ways to express themselves and feel confident in their winter style.
