Jule Campbell, who passed away at 97 in late 2022, forever changed the landscape of American publishing with the creation of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue—one of the most profitable magazine editions in history.
Beyond her work as a photographer, Campbell discovered and nurtured the careers of some of the world’s top supermodels, including fashion expert Roshumba Williams of On The Red Carpet.
Williams credits Campbell with helping to open doors for women in fashion, noting that Campbell’s work “laid the foundation for inclusivity, diversity, and breaking glass ceilings, creating a collective of beautiful women who represented the entire world.”
“Beyond the Gaze,” directed by Jill Campbell—Jule’s daughter-in-law—is currently screening at film festivals, including Woodstock and Newport Beach, as it seeks a distributor.
The documentary offers an intimate glimpse into Jule Campbell’s profound impact on the fashion industry and the women she mentored. Jill Campbell hopes the film inspires younger generations of women by showcasing her mother-in-law’s struggles and triumphs.
“I want people to see the battles she fought and how she overcame them,” said Jill. “This is a story about the many women she worked with, inspired, and helped launch careers. It’s meant to inspire others.”
