University of Salford Joins Forces with China Academy of Art for Innovative Fashion Workshop

by Tina

The University of Salford (UoS) in Greater Manchester, UK, and the China Academy of Art (CAA) recently joined forces to host an innovative fashion workshop focused on using paper materials in fashion design.

In October, a team of educators from UoS traveled to the CAA’s Liangzhu Campus in China to collaborate with their Chinese counterparts. The purpose of the visit was to guide CAA students through a hands-on fashion workshop while sharing insights into the design process, according to a press release shared with FashionUnited.

The workshop aimed to highlight the creative possibilities of paper as a medium in fashion, exploring its potential to create layered, three-dimensional structures. Educators from both institutions worked together to showcase how paper materials can be used to express unique design ideas.

During the event, students were grouped into creative teams, with each team receiving both white and colored paper. The teams were tasked with using the paper to design garments on mannequins. At the end of the workshop, each team presented their final designs to the group.

Bashir Aswat, programme leader for fashion design at UoS, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. “We were pleased to work with our colleagues at the China Academy of Art,” he said. “The workshop was a platform for creativity and individuality. The students’ designs were innovative, demonstrating their unique understanding of fashion through the medium of paper.”

Aswat also emphasized the value of the international partnership. “This event showcased the strength of international collaboration between Salford and one of China’s leading arts institutions. It also gave us, as educators, the chance to deepen our understanding of the design process from a cross-cultural perspective.”

The UoS delegation included Bashir Aswat, Paul Marsden, Dominic Barber, and Yingxin Jiang. They were joined by Allan Walker, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dean of the School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology at UoS. On the Chinese side, the CAA team featured Xiaoding Wang, Shuying Wang, Huailei Yu, and Jialu Li.
