Angelina Jolie is known for her ability to captivate audiences, and her latest role in the film *Maria* is no exception. Directed by Pablo Larraín, the film tells the story of the legendary opera singer Maria Callas. In this project, Jolie faces unique competition from the stunning costumes designed by Massimo Cantini Parrini.
In *Maria*, costumes symbolize different phases of Callas’s life. Avant-garde outfits highlight her most iconic performances, while luxurious wool coats and tailored gowns reflect her sometimes controversial social life. Accessories like oversized glasses and sparkling brooches illustrate Callas’s perfectionist nature. Overall, the film offers a rich visual experience that showcases not just any diva, but one of the greatest.
Massimo Cantini Parrini shared insights into his creative process for bringing Maria Callas’s wardrobe to life on screen. He emphasized that finding inspiration was not difficult, given Callas’s status as a diva who was frequently photographed and interviewed. Beyond iconic images, Parrini researched personal moments in Callas’s life, which informed his designs spanning the 1950s to 1970s. He created over 60 costumes for the film, with around 50 making it into the final cut.
Parrini also highlighted the importance of depicting Callas’s world beyond what she wore on stage. He collaborated closely with the production designer to fill her apartment with garments that represented her memories and experiences. The film features a “secret room” filled with dresses, handbags, shoes, and jewelry that reflect Callas’s glamorous past.
One notable piece is a cream nightgown worn by Jolie as Callas in her apartment. Parrini designed it to symbolize protection and comfort during a vulnerable time in Callas’s life. Inspired by traditional dressing gowns, he chose an ivory color to contrast with the darker outfits she wore outside.
The film’s glamour is enhanced by Jolie’s portrayal of Callas, which resonated deeply with Parrini. He noted that Jolie fully embraced the character throughout filming. Their collaboration involved extensive discussions about designs and fabrics to ensure they captured the essence of both Callas and Jolie.
Accessories played a crucial role in bringing authenticity to the film. Parrini sourced various items, including scarves and gloves, from different locations, primarily London and Italy. Many pieces had to be recreated due to their rarity.
Parrini expressed pride in two specific garments: the nightgown and a performance outfit from *Medea*. The latter features a simple silhouette but is unique because it was hand-painted, showcasing extensive craftsmanship.
