Model and influencer Alex Consani made history on Monday, December 4, when she was named Model of the Year at the 2024 Fashion Awards in London. At just 21 years old, Consani became the first transgender woman to receive this prestigious honor, joining the ranks of past recipients like Kate Moss, Bella Hadid, and Cara Delevingne.
During her acceptance speech, Consani expressed gratitude to those who paved the way for her success, particularly the Black transgender women who fought for a place in the fashion industry. “I can’t accept this award without thanking those that came before me and specifically the Black trans women that really fought for the space that I’m in today,” she said.
Consani also paid tribute to her parents for their unwavering support of her modeling dreams. “I remember being 12 years old and telling them I wanted to join this industry, and they met me with support,” she said. “I think a lot of other parents of trans children should follow their example. Change is more than possible; it’s needed. And this is a big step in the right direction.”
Born in California, Consani began her modeling career in 2015 and signed with IMG Models at the age of 16. Her popularity skyrocketed as she gained a massive following on TikTok, where she now has over 4 million followers. Known for her striking bleach-blonde hair and matching eyebrows, she has since walked for major brands including Tom Ford, Alexander McQueen, and Versace.
In October, Consani made history once again as she and Brazilian model Valentina Sampaio became the first transgender women to walk in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
Consani’s influence extends beyond the runway. Earlier this year, she appeared in Charli XCX’s “360” music video, showcasing her signature style. Charli XCX congratulated Consani on her Model of the Year win, commenting “YESYESYESSSSS!!!” on Consani’s Fashion Awards post.
At the Teen Vogue Summit in November, Consani spoke about the ongoing need for better representation in the fashion industry. “The more I work, the more I see the lack of representation we need. It pushes me to work harder,” she said. “I’m friends with many talented women who are often overlooked. I’m blessed to be on stage and to have my voice heard in the conversation about change.”
Consani’s win marks a significant moment for both the fashion industry and the transgender community, as she continues to challenge boundaries and break new ground.
