Hong Kong, 3rd December 2024 – GINZA XIAOMA, a luxury store located in Central’s New World Tower, has increased its security measures following a daring robbery that saw thieves steal 66 Hermès handbags worth over HK$10 million.
The robbery took place early on Saturday morning when three masked individuals bypassed two security barriers in just three minutes, making off with the prized handbags. Store representative Mr. Chao expressed his shock, telling local media, “I never expected such a bold robbery to happen in a Class A office building in Central.”
CCTV footage revealed the thieves smashing the reinforced glass door and quickly breaching a steel gate. They stole high-end handbags, including iconic models like the Kelly and Birkin, before fleeing the scene.
Despite the significant loss, GINZA XIAOMA has already completed compensation procedures for the affected consignors, absorbing the financial blow since the stolen items were uninsured. According to Mr. Chao, the stolen handbags accounted for approximately 15% of the store’s inventory, which included around 440 Hermès bags.
In response to the heist, the store is now consulting with security experts to strengthen its protection systems. Plans include upgrading gates and enhancing the security of display cases. Additionally, the store is considering taking out insurance for its valuable stock in the future.
Industry insiders point to the growing appeal of Hermès handbags as targets for thieves, citing the brand’s “allocation” policy. This policy, which requires customers to buy other items before qualifying to purchase high-demand bags, has led to increased market prices and a rise in thefts aimed at reselling these luxury items quickly.
Mr. Chao also issued a warning to the public, advising caution when purchasing Hermès handbags at prices significantly lower than the market rate, as they may be stolen goods. The store is working closely with the police to track the stolen items and raise awareness about the risks of buying counterfeit or stolen luxury products.
