Maggie Tabberer, a pioneering figure in the Australian fashion industry, has passed away at the age of 87. Her daughters, Amanda and Brooke, confirmed the news on social media late last week.

“We lost our beautiful mother and Nanna this morning,” Amanda wrote. “She was an icon in every sense of the word, and we will miss her dearly… along with the rest of Australia. Rest in peace, Nanna. We love you to bits forever.”

Tabberer’s illustrious career spanned several decades and included work in modeling, fashion design, television, publishing, editorial, and public relations. She is widely regarded as Australia’s first supermodel and a national fashion legend.

Tributes poured in across social media from various industries and personalities, celebrating her lasting impact on Australian culture.

The Australian Fashion Council shared their condolences, calling her “a true Australian icon.” “She made her mark as Vogue Australia’s first cover girl and became a beloved figure in fashion. Her legacy will inspire generations to come,” they wrote.

Radio host Amanda Keller also paid tribute on Instagram. “I just loved Maggie Tabberer. I first met her when I was a young segment producer on the midday show. She filled in as host of Ray Martin, and I’ll never forget the grace and respect she showed me and everyone around her,” Keller said. “Sending condolences to the many who loved her.”

Fashion designer Peter Morrisey described Tabberer as the epitome of elegance. “She exuded poise, intelligence, style, grace, and street smarts, all wrapped up in a whisper of elegance. When Maggie liked you, it felt like being seen and honoured,” Morrisey said. “Her infectious humour and warmth left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her.”

The Australian Retailers Association also mourned her loss, praising Tabberer as an “epic trailblazer.” “She will be fondly remembered as one of our most stylish and committed icons of fashion and media,” the ARA said in a statement.

Maggie Tabberer is survived by her daughters, Brooke and Amanda, and her grandson, Marco.
