Where Fashion and Entrepreneurship Collide

University of Missouri senior Samie Chitwood is turning her passion for fashion into a successful business venture, Blossoms Boutique LLC, a startup offering unique, affordable styles for women. Her entrepreneurial journey exemplifies the hands-on learning opportunities provided by Mizzou’s Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business, which has allowed her to gain real-world experience while pursuing her degree.

Chitwood is set to graduate in December with a business degree, specializing in marketing, along with a minor in textile and apparel management from the College of Arts and Science. What started as a creative idea has grown into an online retail business, all while Chitwood was a student. Following her graduation, she is expanding her business with a new brick-and-mortar storefront in Belle, Missouri, located just 25 miles from her hometown of St. James. This new chapter reflects her commitment to giving back to the community that shaped her and remaining close to her family and friends.

In a recent interview, Chitwood shared insights into her time at Mizzou and how the university has shaped her entrepreneurial path.

Why did you choose Mizzou?

“I bleed black and gold!” Chitwood says with pride. “I’m the third generation in my family to attend Mizzou. Growing up, I spent countless weekends at homecoming events, soaking in the school spirit and tradition. My siblings are also here, so Mizzou has always felt like home. The family connection and the vibrant campus community made choosing Mizzou an easy decision.”

How did you make the most of hands-on learning opportunities?

Chitwood fully embraced Mizzou’s hands-on learning approach, using her coursework and projects to benefit her business. “I focused on real-world applications, especially for Blossoms Boutique LLC. My professors were extremely supportive, offering feedback that helped me refine my ideas. The projects I worked on weren’t just assignments; they were integral to growing my business. I also gained valuable experience through group projects, networking events, and workshops, which helped expand my professional connections.”

How has Mizzou supported your business goals?

Chitwood credits Mizzou for providing a solid academic foundation while also offering practical opportunities to apply her learning. She is especially grateful to faculty members in the College of Business, including Joel Poor, Stacie Kane, Brady Hodges, and Katie Essing. “They provided invaluable guidance that shaped both my academic journey and my business,” she says. “Many of my class projects focused on Blossoms Boutique, allowing me to develop marketing strategies, analyze industry trends, and refine my business model.”

What’s your favorite Mizzou memory?

Chitwood’s favorite memory is running to her sorority, Pi Beta Phi, on bid day. “I didn’t know at the time how much it would become my home away from home and where I’d meet some of my best friends,” she reflects.

Why are you proud to be a Tiger?

“Mizzou represents tradition, community, and opportunity,” Chitwood says. “Being a third-generation Tiger makes me feel deeply connected to the university’s legacy. Mizzou has given me so much, from lifelong friendships to a quality education and the experiences that helped me build my business.”

What would you tell someone considering Mizzou?

“If you’re thinking about coming to Mizzou, go for it — you won’t regret it,” Chitwood advises. “Mizzou is not just a university, but a community filled with opportunities and amazing people. Whether you’re focused on academics, campus involvement, or making lifelong friends, Mizzou has something for everyone. The hands-on learning and supportive professors will help you grow in ways you never expected. And the campus spirit is unmatched—there’s nothing like the excitement of a fall Saturday at Faurot Field or experiencing Homecoming.”

Chitwood’s story is a testament to the power of combining education with entrepreneurial ambition, and her future looks bright as she continues to grow her business in Belle, Missouri.
