On March 18, the National Bureau of Statistics announced the total retail sales of cosmetics from January to February 2025. Statistics show that from January to February, the total retail sales of cosmetics was 72 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.4%, and the total retail sales of social consumer goods was 8373.1 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4%. This is the first time that the retail sales of cosmetics from January to February exceeded 70 billion yuan.
In fact, in 2024, the total retail sales of domestic cosmetics was 435.7 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 1.1%, while the total retail sales of social consumer goods increased by 3.5% year-on-year in the same period. Since 2021, the growth rate of total cosmetics retail sales has never outperformed the market.
At the same time, the import of cosmetics from January to February also picked up. According to the data of the General Administration of Customs, from January to February 2025, the import of beauty cosmetics and toiletries was 49,936.4 tons, a year-on-year increase of 14.1%; the import amount was 17.31 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 3.3%. Since 2021, the number and amount of imported cosmetics have both begun to decline, which will continue until 2024.
